Music as Torture

Musicians are up in arms over their music possibly being used as a form of "torture".

For those of you who live in a box, loud music is piped into a cell to prevent the bad guy from sleeping and generally bug the shit out of them. This might be used in combination with other ways of making them uncomfortable.

I just wanted to say that I think it is awesome that Metallica's James Hetfield has said he thinks its awesome that his music is used. Maybe he didn't say it was awesome, but he did not mind.

Metallica frontman James Hetfield recently told German-language TV network 3sat that part of him was proud the U.S. military chose the band’s music to torture prisoners at U.S. detention centers in Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay. “It’s strong; it’s music that’s powerful,” Hetfield says. “It represents something that they don’t like—maybe freedom, aggression… I don’t know… Freedom of speech. And then part of me is kind of bummed about it that people worry about us being attached to some political statement because of that. We’ve got nothing to do with this and we’re trying to be as apolitical as possible, ’cause I think politics and music, at least for us, don’t mix.”

Chalk up another point for why I love Metallica.

By the way is anyone suprised that the biggest bands complaining are:

Pearl Jam
Rage Againt the Machine
REM - Tell me you wouldn't have told everything if you had to listen to "shiny happy people holding hands" over and over again?

LOL, I would be ironic if U2's music was used.

Interesting but little side note.... THE UNITED STATES DOES NOT TORTURE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!! You are always talking about "slippery slopes" This is among the most dangerous ones.

I am not sure if your all caps sentence is a statement or a joke.

Regardless, America does not torture. It does not execute. It does not target innocents. It does not engage the enemy first.

So called American Torture is a trip to Disney Land compared to the bad guys idea of torture.

I will not cry for the dickheads who have to endure 24hrs of "Jeremy".

Yeah I agree to a point. The music thing is just kind of funny, but there is much more going on here. You know that. I just cringe at the thought of the lines we have crossed that we profess to be above.

I have no idea what lines you think we have crossed recently that were not crossed back in the day. If anything our new found national cowardice is the reason we have a lot of our foreign issues today. If these assholes really thought America was going to get into the fight 100% they wouldn't pull this crap with us.

We care too much about what people outside the US and our best allies think about us.
